Novelist Emma Strand (Scottie Thompson) is on vacation at the seaside in 1892 California with her second husband Albert (Connor Paolo) when she encounters her first husband George (Jilon VanOver) and his mentally unstable new wife, Lillian (Vivian Kerr). Emma and Albert take refuge from a sudden storm at George and Lillian's mansion. Over the course of the evening, Emma must confront her past, the temptation of adultery, and the disturbing possibility the house is haunted by George and Lillian's recently drowned daughter Hazel.

The film was quickly banned by various religious groups and community leaders who claimed the film opened a channel to speak with the devil himself. Since that time the film has been banned and suppressed from the public. Recently the film was purchased by an anonymous buyer and will be released to the public for the first time in over 40 years.

The film reproduces a magic act Méliès performed at his Paris theater-of-illusions, the Théâtre Robert-Houdin. Conjuring is notable as Méliès's second film, and as his first to move beyond the actuality film genre pioneered by the Lumière brothers and experiment with using the camera to capture a theatrical magic act. (Later in 1896, with his discovery of the substitution splice technique, Méliès was able to begin augmenting his theatrical illusions with new special effects unique to film.) Conjuring can thus be seen as Méliès's first foray into the world of fiction film. The film was released by Méliès's Star Film Company and numbered 2 in its catalogues.

In a world destroyed by war, pandemics, and disaster, a small group of survivors finds refuge inside a rebuilt stronghold known as The Fort. In the latter stages of World War II, four German soldiers take refuge in an old Napoleonic fort, built on Roman ruins. They were hastily pulled from the Eastern Front, knowing nothing of their mission. At first the peace and calm of The Fort appears to be a place to rest from the war but the fort's stone walls do little to keep out the horror of the war.

During the War of Succession, Franco and Ciccio are arrested for being accused of desertion from the Northern army. Rather than condemn them to death for his carelessness, they will be chosen for a special mission: to infiltrate as expert officers on a delicate espionage action.
